Arctic Farmer's sole proprietor, Darwin Rudkevitch identified a need for residential landscaping services over a decade ago. He filled the communities' requirements on a part-time basis until 1999 when the demand for this service became a full time enterprise. Darwin's knowledge stemmed from early childhood duties in a hydroponics nursery started by his father in the early 1970's in Yellowknife. Young Darwin quickly absorbed his father's enthusiasm growing fresh vegetables and landscaping north of sixty and he tended to the nursery for his overall reward fresh grown vegetables. After many years of apprenticeship with his father, he found his calling and expressed his talents in his personal gardens. His appetite for landscaping design and horticulture was filled with hours of self-study, experiments, eventually rewarded by the perfect lawn, flower bed or savory vegetable. His quest for a larger, sweeter vegetable and lush lawns took him to Northern American Universities for soil analysis. The last piece of the puzzle was in place, and based on soil analysis he was able to mix the soul for a perfect lawn and garden. The community recognized his talent and had him work on commercial and residential landscaping designs and projects. This infant, part-time enterprise grew slowly through word of mouth until the demand for landscaping services exceeded Darwin's available hours. In 1999 Darwin was facing a critical decision, to continue employed in public service or take a risk and enter the private sector. After months of contemplation and planning, Darwin's decision was to change his part-time hobby into a full service landscaping business. In 2004, Sherry and Roland Rudkevitch joined Darwin on the team and added a nursery and a gift shop to the landscaping services. Ever since, Arctic Farmer has grown into what we now know as "The big red barns". During fall 2006, they opened a TireCraft business and tire shop in the new barn. |
